Smasher

Overview[]

Originated from Metal Slug 6, where it only appeared in a final mission. A member (or machine?) of the Invaders that attacks by hovering and attempting to crush the player with its bloated stomach.

In Metal Slug Defense, its attack has been sped up to match the pace of the game.

Normal attack: When Smasher gets in detection range of an enemy unit, it leaps into the air and begins hovering. In this time, it is still considered a ground unit, so all aimed attacks in range will be directed upwards towards it. Once it is in melee range, Smasher will inflate and land on them for relatively high damage for an early game unit. High knockback power.

Special attack: Allows the player to make Smasher hover even if there are no enemies in its vision.

Tactics[]

With an excellent HP to AP ratio, immunity to knockback and the ability to divert certain spreading damage projectiles upwards, Smasher is considered one of the best lead walls in the game. It is particularly effective against melee units, who will miss about half of their attacks attacking the space underneath a hovering Smasher. The high damage output is another great bonus.

  • Smasher is commonly used to slow down early-game melee rush units (Iori, Slug Armor) and speedsters (Leona, Benimaru). Its immunity to knockback is especially helpful here.
  • In the late game, use Smasher's special to make it hover early. When it reaches the frontlines, most bullets will fly towards it and consequently away from your concentrated troops at the bottom.

When using Smasher, there are a few units to watch out for that can limit but may not totally nullify its walling abilities.

  • Units with non-aimed attacks can ignore Smasher and attack the units it is trying to protect. Some examples include the Girida-Os, Sarubias, Kyo, Fat Eri, and Clark.
  • Mars People Elite can slow down an advancing Smasher with its special.
  • Although Smasher is commonly considered a Rebel Zombie counter, the far leaping distance of the zombie can still sometimes allow it to hit the units Smasher is trying to protect, provided the map is long enough to let the special charge.
